Ramona Gail (Carr) smitherman

JACKSONVILLE, FL - Ramona Carr Smitherman, age 65, passed away Thursday, January 15, 2009, after battling courageously for 15 years with multiple sclerosis. Ramona was born on June 7, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan and grew up in Rickman, Tennessee. She lived and worked in North Carolina and retired to Jacksonville, Florida in 1993, where she lived until her passing. Ramona was preceded in death by her mother, Selma S. Carr and her father, Claude C. Carr. Ramona was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and an active member of the Wesconnett Church of Christ. Ramona spent her career as a Media Coordinator in the Surry County, North Carolina School System. She was awarded Teacher of Year at Mountain Park Elementary in 1984-1985 and earned her Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. She is survived by her devoted husband of 43 years and the love of her life, Denny Smitherman; her sons, John D. Smitherman, Jr, (Ruth), Scott T. Smitherman; a brother, Jim W. Carr (Doris); and five grandchildren, Will, Alex, Gracie, Parker and Jordan Smitherman. Ramona enjoyed studying the Bible with others, traveling and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held, Tuesday, January 20, 2009, at 11 a.m. in the Wesconnett Church of Christ with Ministers James Colwell and Malcom Lammons officiating followed by interment in Riverside Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the Wesconnett Church of Christ on Monday, from 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Wesconnett Church of Christ, Appalachian State University Reich College of Education, or Florida School of Preaching, Lakeland, FL.
