Isaac Newton Smitherman, 77 years old, widely known retired farmer of Crawford County, died early Thursday morning, July 7, 1938, at the family home in the Oak Grove community, five miles east of Van Buren, after an illness of more than eight months. He died of Stomach Cancer.

He had lived in that section for the last 40 years and had been a member of the oak Grove Baptist church during that time.

Mr. Smitherman was born November 7, 1860 in Alabama to Joseph B. and Malinda E. Smotherman Smitherman.

He was survived by his wife, Mrs. Lulu August Tucker Smitherman of the home; four daughters, Mrs. W. F. Bailey (Maggie) and Mrs. A. Furrow (Susie) of Fort Smith, Mrs. M.R. West (Effie) of Braham, Oklahoma and Mrs Frederick 'Pete' Bruns (Sybil) of Van Buren; one son, Isaac Newton 'Newt' Smitherman Jr. of the home; 13 grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at Ocker Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with the Rev. John M. Basinger, Baptist minister of Mulberry, officiating.
